Doctoral Programs

IBiS | NUIN | IGP

Faculty in the life sciences departments participate in the administration of three major interdepartmental graduate programs as follows:

1) Interdepartmental Biological Sciences Program (IbiS)
IBiS, a Ph.D. program on the Evanston campus, features more than 60 faculty members from diverse departments including Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Cell Biology (BMBCB), Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Neurobiology and Physiology, and the Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Research Institute. The expanded curriculum prepares students for careers in academia, government, industry, and teaching.

2) The Northwestern University Institute for Neuroscience (NUIN)
NUIN is a multi-campus, multi-departmental graduate program offering the Ph.D. in neuroscience. Students may choose to do their doctoral work with any of over 100 researchers whose interests represent a wide range of neuroscience topics, from the molecular to the cognitive/behavioral levels.

3) Integrated Graduate Program in the Life Sciences (IGP)
The Integrated Graduate Program in the Life Sciences (IGP) is an umbrella program for graduate student training in all basic science and clinical departments at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. Established in 1990, this innovative program is designed to provide comprehensive, interdisciplinary training in modern biomedical sciences while allowing each student the needed flexibility to design their course of study, pursue individual research interests, and choose an appropriate thesis advisor. The broad choice of research opportunities within the IGP serves students well - both those who enter graduate school committed to a specific research field and those who begin with many potential interests.
